My Story
I was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1974 and immigrated to the United States at the age of ten. At twenty, I proudly became an American citizen, embracing a new chapter while remaining connected to my roots.
I never imagined that one day I would be writing a book inspired by my own journey.
I wrote it to share the lessons, practices, reflections, and insights that supported me along the way. My hope is not to tell anyone how to heal, but to offer encouragement, inspiration, and practical tools that may help others navigate their own journeys, whether they are facing illness, loss, uncertainty, or simply seeking a deeper connection with themselves.
This book is a reflection of what I have learned through both teaching and living. It is a reminder that healing is not always about curing; sometimes it is about transforming. It is about learning to live fully, love deeply, and appreciate the gift of each day we are given.
For many years, I dedicated my life to helping others heal. As a Reiki Master Teacher, I had the privilege of offering support, comfort, and guidance to countless individuals facing physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges. Starting in 2017, for more than six years, I volunteered my time providing free Reiki sessions to cancer patients and teaching them how to practice Reiki on themselves, encouraging them to become active participants in their healing journeys. In 2020 my daily practice of reciting the Reiki Principles also shared in this book, was selected for publication in the December 2020 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, where it was featured in the article "The Rites That Bind."
Life, as it does for all of us, presented me with challenges of my own.
In 1996, I experienced the heartbreaking loss of my first daughter Esperança Rocha and nearly lost my own life due to complications during childbirth. It was a profound loss that changed me forever and taught me how precious and fragile life truly is.
In 2009, I underwent a mandible reconstruction after being diagnosed with an ameloblastoma. Once again, I found myself facing uncertainty, fear, and the need to trust in my own strength and resilience.
In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I lost my mother. One of the most difficult parts of that experience was not being able to say goodbye to her in person.
Then, in 2025, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It was another unexpected chapter in my life—one that would test me physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Yet it was also during this journey that many of the lessons shared in this book became more important than ever.
Each of these experiences brought pain, loss, uncertainty, and moments of deep reflection. But they also taught me about courage, gratitude, acceptance, and the incredible power of living in the present moment. They reminded me that while we cannot always choose what happens to us, we can choose how we meet life's challenges, one moment at a time.
If my experience can bring comfort, hope, or strength to even one person, then writing these pages have been worthwhile.
When I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer I made a conscious decision. Instead of asking, "Why me?" I asked, "What is this here to teach me?" I wanted to understand the lesson. I wanted to discover how I could care for my body more deeply, strengthen my spirit, and grow through the experience rather than be defined by it.
As I moved through six months of chemotherapy, multiple surgeries, and countless medical appointments, I remained committed to staying present. I listened closely to my body and worked with it through love, patience, compassion, and trust rather than fear. I accepted my diagnosis as part of my life's journey—not as the end of it.
Throughout this experience, I gained a profound understanding of healing from both sides: as a practitioner and as a patient. I learned that healing involves far more than physical treatment alone. Mindset matters. Presence matters. Self-love matters. Faith matters. Nutrition, rest, emotional well-being, gratitude, and the willingness to embrace each day all play an important role.
This journey deepened my appreciation for life in ways I never could have imagined. It taught me resilience during difficult moments, gratitude during uncertain times, and the importance of finding peace in the present moment. While none of us can control every challenge we face, we can choose how we respond to those challenges.
With love and gratitude,
Corália Rocha
Throughout this book, you will find simple sketch-style illustrations accompanying many of the chapters. These are more than just images—they are moments from my own life. (The sketch-style illustrations shown in this book were digitally generated from original photographs along my journey and are not hand-drawn by me.) Each one holds a special meaning and reflects places that have shaped my journey of healing, gratitude, and living in the present moment.

A Note About the Artwork in the Book

Meditation
Each person has their own way of entering that sacred space where the mind becomes still and there is nothing but the peacefulness of now.
For me, it's painting. Whenever I paint, I enter a space where it feels like the world stops. There is only me, the paintbrushes, and the art unfolding on the canvas. The worries of yesterday disappear, and the concerns of tomorrow fade away. In that moment, I am fully present.
Find your form of meditation and allow yourself to dive deeply into it. Give yourself permission to step away from the noise of the world and reconnect with the peace that already exists within you.

In gratitude to my dear friend Corália "Cory" who has touched my life in so many ways.
Cory and I first met on the job where we both worked in radiation oncology. Who knew that meeting would change our lives just as this book will change the lives of all who read it?
I remember her giving me a reiki card
Just for Today
I WILL NOT BE ANGRY
I WILL NOT WORRY
I WILL BE GRATEFUL
I WILL DO MY WORK HONESTLY
I WILL BE KIND
TO EVERY LIVING THING
I often take people who make these sayings their mantra with a grain of salt. I never met anyone who truly embraced this philosophy and lives and breathes it every moment of every day as Cory does. She is a rare and beautiful angel on earth who walks her talk and heals others just by being who she is. Cory is an accomplished Reiki master who tirelessly offered Reiki healing to cancer patients for years free of charge because she is all heart. I’ve never met someone who has such integrity, strength, determination and courage. She is calm and loving through every moment and every storm.
Who knew we would become best friends? She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer after gallbladder surgery. She was 50 years old. I joined her cancer journey when she embarked on a course of chemo of twelve treatments every two weeks. Each day was a one-and-half to two-hour car ride each way. You would think that this would have been the nightmare of all nightmares, but it was fun. We talked and laughed and shared our stories. I have never met someone so brave and so willing to face the worst moment of their lives with such faith and kindness to herself and others.
She worked from home all during chemo, weathering all the side effects with amazing gratitude and grace. She went through another surgery, meant to be a Whipple which morphed into a different procedure on the table, the Nanoknife. As a retired Nurse Practitioner, I knew the hell she was going through on every level. The chemo was tough as was the uncertainty of her cancer diagnosis and the great fear that the chemo and surgery wouldn’t work.
By the grace of God, it did. Through it all, she was the most gracious, grateful and kind woman I ever met. There is not another person on the planet I admire and love more. A lot of people share their cancer journey to tell their story as part of their own healing.
The minute Cory was done with treatment she told me she felt guided to write this book to help others, not just for those on a cancer journey but for all people going through a difficult time. The simplicity and truth contained in these pages offer something for everyone. Gold nuggets offered with wisdom, grace and love. Find the truth that rings true for you.
With love,

The Secret Is to Live in the Moment: A Journey to Self-Healing by Corália Rocha is more than a memoir. It is a heartfelt invitation to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with what truly matters.
Through her personal journey, Corália openly shares the challenges she has faced and the wisdom she has gained along the way. What touched me most was how she chooses to navigate life with gratitude, self-love, compassion, and a deep appreciation for both her own life and the people she loves. Her vulnerability is inspiring because it reminds us that healing isn’t about perfection. It’s about giving ourselves grace as we continue to grow.
Throughout the book, you are invited to pause and reflect on your own life, your choices, your relationships, and the moments that shape who you are. I found myself doing exactly that, and I walked away with a renewed appreciation for living in the present instead of allowing yesterday or tomorrow to steal today’s joy.
This is a beautiful, uplifting read that offers encouragement, perspective, and hope. If you’re looking for a book that will inspire you to embrace yourself more fully, appreciate the life you have, and take meaningful steps on your own healing journey, I wholeheartedly recommend The Secret Is to Live in the Moment. It is a book that stays with you long after you’ve turned the final page.

Something for Everyone
The Secret Is to Live in the Moment offers something for everyone. Whether facing a challenging health crisis or not, Cory reminds us that the true gift of life is in the present moment. Her book is chocked full of simple, yet powerful ways of engaging our senses to do just that. Every chapter is short and powerful, making it an easy read. I believe it has appeal even to the “non-reader”. While I found every chapter had something to offer me, the lines “Healing is not about holding on to everyone. It is about holding on to yourself.”, in Chapter 6, really rang a bell for me. Thank you, Cory, for giving me permission to stop white-knuckling it through life. You’ve taught me that holding on to people, places and things that no longer bring me joy leaves little space for new joyful things to come in. Love and gratitude being sent to you for reminding me to breathe; slowly and deeply. It really is all right…right here, right now.

Book Review for
The Secret is to Live in the Moment: A Journey to Self-Healing
There are books that teach healing, and there are books that quietly embody it.
The Secret is to Live in the Moment belongs to the second category.
Corália Rocha does not write as someone standing above her readers, offering formulas for wellness. She writes as someone who has walked through profound uncertainty and has discovered that healing often begins not with extraordinary revelations but with an extraordinary willingness to return, again and again, to the present moment.
At its heart, this is not simply a book about recovery from illness. It is a book about relationships: our relationship with ourselves, our thoughts, our bodies, our fears, our gratitude, and ultimately with life itself. Rather than presenting healing as a destination, Rocha invites readers into a daily practice of awareness that unfolds one moment at a time.
What makes this book particularly approachable is its simplicity. The chapters flow naturally through themes such as mindfulness, meditation, affirmations, gratitude, nutrition, energy awareness, Reiki principles, and the importance of choosing relationships that support healing rather than diminish it. Each chapter builds on the previous one, creating a gentle progression rather than overwhelming the reader with information.
One of the book's greatest strengths is its accessibility and its warmth.
Readers do not need prior experience with meditation, mindfulness, or energy practices to follow Rocha's reflections. She introduces these ideas in a conversational tone, making them feel like invitations rather than requirements. The overall tone is compassionate and encouraging, making this especially appealing to readers who may feel emotionally exhausted, overwhelmed, or intimidated by more technical self-help literature.
The accompanying artwork reflects the gentle flow of compassion and the author's steady hand.
The book also succeeds because it never loses sight of hope.
Hope here is not presented as blind optimism or positive thinking. Instead, Rocha frames hope as a practice - something cultivated through attention, gratitude, and returning to the present moment, even when circumstances remain difficult. That distinction gives the book emotional authenticity.
As someone who works professionally in trauma, addiction recovery, and stress management, I particularly appreciated the emphasis on slowing down. Modern culture often teaches us that healing is something to be achieved through constant effort. Rocha gently challenges that assumption by reminding readers that peace is found not by racing toward a better future but by inhabiting the present with greater awareness.
That message is deeply needed.
At the same time, readers should understand what this book is - and what it is not.
This is not a clinical guide to trauma recovery, nor does it attempt to synthesize psychological research or medical evidence on mindfulness or energy healing. Instead, it is an experiential narrative rooted in the author's personal journey and spiritual worldview. The inclusion of Reiki principles, affirmations, and discussions of energy will resonate strongly with readers who appreciate holistic healing traditions, while those seeking a more evidence-based framework may wish to read it alongside books grounded in contemporary psychology or neuroscience. The author appropriately notes that the book is intended for educational and inspirational purposes and is not a substitute for professional medical care.
Another strength lies in the book's emotional sincerity.
There is no sense that suffering is minimized or romanticized. Instead, Rocha consistently reminds readers that healing unfolds differently for each person. That humility lends the book credibility. Rather than promising transformation through a single technique, she offers a collection of practices that help readers cultivate greater presence, gratitude, and self-awareness over time.
The book's simplicity mirrors its central message: healing is less about accumulating more information and more about learning to inhabit this moment more fully.
Ultimately, The Secret is to Live in the Moment offers readers something increasingly rare: permission to slow down.
In a culture that constantly encourages striving, fixing, and becoming, Rocha gently reminds us that the deepest transformations often begin when we stop running from the present. Whether readers are navigating illness or emotional hardship, or simply seeking a more grounded way of life, this book offers a compassionate companion.
It offers a thoughtful introduction to mindfulness-centered living, written with warmth, humility, and genuine care for the reader. Those drawn to holistic wellness, meditation,
gratitude practices, and spiritual approaches to self-healing will likely find it comforting and encouraging.
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
The Secret is to Live in the Moment is a heartfelt reminder that healing is rarely found by escaping our lives. More often, it begins when we learn to meet ourselves, just as we are, in the only place where healing has ever truly been available: the present moment.
